Rosey by Thrive Market Paper Products are a Sustainable Swap for Your Average Paper Towels

While you can, occasionally, replace disposable paper products with reusable alternatives, what about the products you can’t? Things like toilet paper, paper towels, and facial tissue are necessary essentials in any household, and most people go through them quite frequently. That’s why the team behind Rosey by Thrive Market paper products decided to find innovative ways to make these everyday products more sustainable. 

The team recently unveiled a whole new line of Rosey by Thrive Market paper products, including bath tissue, facial tissue, napkins, and paper towels. We spoke to Erin McCarthy, Thrive Market’s Senior Product Innovator for Home, Health & Beauty, to find out exactly what makes our new paper products better additions to your home. 

How Thrive Market is Making Better Paper Products 

While the content of our previous Thrive Market paper products were better than most, there was room for improvement. “Some products were made of bamboo, others were a mix of bamboo and recycled materials,” McCarthy says of the content which was well-intentioned, but still not up to the team’s sustainability standards. She also explained that while the products themselves were made of recycled and sustainable materials, it required plastic wrapping to protect them from damage during shipping. 

After listening to both member concerns and our own expert teams’ advice, McCarthy and her team led the charge to revamp the entire paper products collection. Here’s how they did it. 

Step 1: Domestic Production 

“We’re working with the same supplier, but we’re moving all the production from China to the U.S.,” she says. “So everything is now manufactured in the U.S..” This will keep carbon emissions down, as the products don’t have to be shipped from so far away. 

Step 2: Plastic-Free Packaging 

One of the major goals of the revamp was to remove all plastic from each paper product’s packaging. “Instead of being wrapped in plastic, everything is now wrapped in paper,” McCarthy says. The paper towels, bath tissue, facial tissue, and napkins are all wrapped in paper. “Even that little plastic piece on the inside of the facial tissue box — it’s a dust flap, nobody needs it. So it’s now 100% plastic-free.”

Step 3: 100% Recycled Content 

Previous Thrive Market paper products contained some recycled content, but the new line is made with entirely recycled content in all paper towels, bath tissue, facial tissue, and napkins. “Our paper products used to be a mix of bamboo and recycled materials, but now it’s 100% FSC-certified recycled content,” McCarthy explains. “So all the wood pulp is from sustainably managed forests and it’s a minimum of 50% post-consumer recycled content.”

Step 4: Improved Performance 

While they were at it, the team also addressed quality issues to make the products perform better. “The tear is better, the perforation, the absorption, all of that is improved,” McCarthy says. “So now, it’s just a better product overall.”
