Spring Cleaning Checklist: Conscious Cleaning Tips for Your Whole Home

Last Update: April 11, 2022

Spring always comes with a feeling of renewal. You might get the urge to fling open windows to let in a floral breeze, swap out that cozy bedding with something light and crisp, and (who knows!) maybe even pull out those hard-to-clean kitchen appliances for a deep scrub.

If you’re feeling the urge to jump-start your spring cleaning, we’ve put together a complete spring cleaning checklist for every room in the house — and some of Thrive Market’s natural and environmentally conscious cleaning products to help you along the way. Our new Rosey line is the perfect addition to your spring cleaning arsenal, providing plant-and-mineral-powered performance without the use of harmful chemicals.

Need even more motivation? We’d also recommend queuing up our Spring Cleaning Playlist for the ultimate in dusting, sweeping, and scrubbing inspiration.

Thrive Market’s Spring Cleaning Checklist

Kitchen Cleaning Checklist

  • Clear out cabinets. Pull everything out of your cabinets and give the insides a good wipe-down. Address any storage issues with organizers, risers, or simply by donating any unused non-food items to your local thrift store.
  • Clean your most-used appliances. Crusty toaster oven? Cloudy blender? Check out our helpful tips for cleaning even the hardest-to-clean kitchen gadgets.
  • Organize under the sink. It’s the messiest spot in just about everyone’s kitchen, so it’s well worth a deep clean. Get rid of any almost-empty cleaning products, wipe down those grimy surfaces, and add some smart storage solutions (like bins, baskets, or risers) if need be.
  • Clean and organize the refrigerator. Remove everything from the refrigerator and toss anything that’s expired (remember to clean out and save any glass jars for storage). Wipe down the shelves and drawers, then give everything a thoughtful reorganization.
  • Clean the oven. Most commercial oven cleaners are full of harsh chemicals, so here’s how to clean an oven the non-toxic way
  • Address any drainage issues. Leaky faucet? Slow sink drain? Smelly garbage disposal? Now’s the time to address those annoying drainage problems (we like these DIY garbage disposal pods or these all-natural hacks for unclogging a drain).
  • Mop the floors. Even if you mop the floors regularly, you may want to do a more thorough mopping under the large appliances and in any hard-to-reach places.
  • Wipe the large appliances and cabinet fronts. Using an all-purpose cleaner and a clean rag, give these much-used surfaces a refresh.
  • Clean the windows. Use a glass cleaner to thoroughly clean your windows. You may also swap out any curtains, as they can get quite dirty from cooking.

Bedroom Cleaning Checklist

  • Wash bedding. Give your bedding a good wash using a natural detergent, including your pillows and comforter. Swap out any bedding that’s too heavy for spring.
  • Flip the mattress. To avoid uneven wear, flip your mattress at least once each year.
  • Clean out your closet. Remove all clothing and shoes from your closet and weed out anything you no longer wear (make a “keep” pile and a “donate” pile). Put back only the things you love, adding organizers where you need them.
  • Organize your drawers. Do the same type of purge with your dresser drawers, adding spacers and organizers as needed.
  • Dust all surfaces. Remove dust from window sills, tabletops, your bed frame, and all lamps using a microfiber cloth.
  • Vacuum and remove stains from rugs. Move furniture to vacuum any rugs; spot treat them as needed using a stain remover
  • Clean windows and window treatments. Clean all windows with a natural glass cleaner, and give your curtains or blinds a good cleaning.
  • Create a relaxing sleep space. Once your room is clean, optimize your bedroom for better sleep health with these helpful tips

Bathroom Cleaning Checklist

  • Scrub the tub and shower. Use a non-toxic tub and tile cleaner and a hard-bristled brush to remove any mildew and soap scum.
  • Clean the toilet. Try this natural toilet bowl cleaner and a toilet brush for the toilet bowl; outside, wipe all toilet surfaces with a cloth and your favorite tile cleaner. Use these DIY toilet bowl bombs in between cleanings.
  • Mop the floors. Sweep and mop floors, making sure to get behind the sink and toilet.
  • Purge and organize all cabinets and drawers. Clean out all medicine cabinets and drawers, tossing out any expired products. Add bins or drawer caddies if you need them (or re-use the resealable bags that come in your Thrive Market order to corral small items like bobby pins and cotton swabs).
  • Clean the mirror. Use a natural glass cleaner and a soft cloth to clean the mirror.
  • Disinfect all surfaces. Clean all counters, faucets, and surfaces last using an all-purpose cleaner to avoid water splashes and remove lingering dust.

Living Room Cleaning Checklist

  • Vacuum and spot-clean all upholstery. Use the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner to clean couches, chairs and other soft furniture.
  • Dust any hard surfaces. Wipe a microfiber cloth along all hard surfaces to remove dust.
  • Wash all blankets. Toss those well-loved throw blankets and pillows in your next load of laundry.
  • Vacuum and shampoo any carpets and rugs. Thoroughly vacuum carpets; if they’re especially dirty or stained, go over them with a rug shampooer.
  • Mop hardwood floors. If you have hardwood or tile floors, mop them using a gentle wood or tile cleaner.
  • Clean windows and window treatments. Clean your windows with a natural glass cleaner, and give the window treatments a dusting (or even toss curtains in the laundry if they’re able to be machine-washed).
